Opportunity For U16 Age Group Athletes Named To The Midwest Division Junior National Team

16 JAN 2023

The Leadership Group of the Midwest Division Junior National Team (MW JN Team) decided to provide an opportunity for first year U16 age group athletes to decline a MW JN Team nomination in favor of a possibly more athletically appropriate and less resource-costly CXC U16 trip.

This year, MW JN Team has a unique scenario: the CXC U16 trip does not involve out-of-region travel involving flights and other complicated logistics (support staff size, accommodations limits, ground transport difficulties, etc.) being located within the comfortable driving distance of Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada.

Approved Proposal: For the 2022-2023 season only, 2008 Year of Birth U16 athletes outside the top 5 divisional qualifiers on the MW JN trip, in consultation with their support of families, coaches, and clubs, can decline a MW JN Team nomination and accept a nomination to the MW CXC U16 Trip, provided logistics will allow. Those wishing to explore such a choice should discuss this with their certified US Ski & Snowboard coach and others on their support team. The coach advising the athlete and the family should follow up with the MW JN Team Head Coach, Trip Leader, and the CXC U16 trip Head Coach and Trip Leader to confirm that logistics will still allow.

This opportunity is not available to athletes in other years of birth, as they do not have similar circumstances, and logistics would not allow it.

In the case of any athlete taking this route in 2023, CXC Midwest Junior Committee Policy and Procedure Section VI-F-7 found in Appendix B of the CXC Junior Committee Operating Policies and Procedures, would be used to fill the declined spot, and it would not revert automatically to the next athlete on any Junior National Qualifier points list.

* No one who qualifies for the U16 trip by being in spots 10-13 on the U16 final points list will get bumped out of that trip if a JN U16 declines their spot and wishes to travel instead to Thunder Bay. We are only adding, not eliminating. If a U16 declines a spot on the JN trip, we will fill that JN declined spot according to the "decline procedure" in the bylaws. If a U16 who qualifies for the U16 trip declines their spot, we will nominate the next U16 (number 14 on the points list, so on and so forth) to the U16 trip squad.
